Burnet Elementary is very excited about celebrating Dia de los ninos/Dia de los libros! Every year, Dia de los ninos (Children's Day) is celebrated in Mexico. In 1996, author and poet Pat Mora had the idea to combine the traditional Mexican holiday with literacy. Pat's mission is to foster "bookjoy" or a love of reading. On April 30 this year, Burnet will have a dia de los ninos celebration in the mulripurpose room 4:00-6:00 PM. There will be videos, dancing, pinatas, prizes, face painting, and more. Come celebrate Children's Day with us!
Shelf Elf Author Jackie Mims Hopkins visited Burnet on March 6, 2014! She spoke to all grades K-5 about how she got the ideas for her books and how she had to keep trying and never give up in her quest to get them published. She also told the students about her life and read parts of her books to them. Our art teacher, Mr. Osuna, made her an incredible welcome banner complete with shelf elves and giant books! He also made her a one-of-a-kind bookerpillar-mobile. Jackie was given a royal ride down the hallway by a 5th grader. She was very impressed! A great time was had by all! Thank you, Jackie, for visiting us here at Burnet!
5th Graders Skype with Origami Yoda Author Tom Angleberger!
On Thursday, February 13, Origami Yoda author Tom Angleberger had a Skype session with Burnet's 5th graders! He talked about all his books, shared his inspirations, took questions, and even showed them how to fold Origami Yoda! It was so awesome to be able to talk to a real author!

Author and Poet Pat Mora visited Burnet's 3rd and 4th graders on April 30! This special day is called El día de los niños/El día de los libros, or Children's Day/Book Day. Pat created this day 16 years ago as a celebration of reading, languages, and cultures. She read her poetry to us, talked about her idea to create Día, and gave us a sneak peek of her newest book. Our Día celebrations also included a "bookjoy" display and RIF book distribution. To find out more about "bookjoy" visit Pat's blog at http://sharebookjoy.blogspot.com/ What a special day it was!
